It is important that the next Bishop of New Hampshire be a visible presence in New Hampshire to enhance an understanding of the Episcopal Church.
 

 

New Hampshire Episcopalians regard their bishop as the chief representative of their faith, and desire that the bishop maintain visibility within the state. Overall agreement on this issue is extremely high (96%). The strongest agreement on this issue is among the 35-44 age category, and the lowest among those under 35. (Rank: 3. It is important that the next Bishop of New Hampshire speak and act against racism and injustice in the Church and society.
 

 

Though there is overall agreement (94%) about the bishop's role in speaking and acting against racism and injustice, there are differences in strength of agreement based upon gender, clerical status, and local community.  Women tend to agree more strongly, as do those under 35, the laity, and urban/suburban residents.  (Rank: 4. It is important that the next Bishop of New Hampshire demonstrate a commitment to interfaith and ecumenical cooperation.
 

 

That their bishop should be committed to ecumenical cooperation is appealing to a large majority of New Hampshire Episcopalians (95%). (Rank: 5. Mean Response: 4.3) 

 


It is important that the next Bishop of New Hampshire be a prophetic voice on social and political issues.
 

 

There is somewhat less enthusiasm for a bishop who speaks out on social and political issues. Though 71% agree or strongly agree on this point, 30% disagree or are undecided. The clergy are more supportive than the laity, and women more than men. (Rank: 10. Mean Response: 3.8)

Although respondents support their bishop's visibility within the state of New Hampshire, they are less definite about visibility in the national Church. There is little difference of opinion among clergy and lay people, but detectable differences in men and women, with the former demonstrating slightly more disagreement. (Rank: 10. It is important that the next Bishop of New Hampshire continue to support the blessing of committed same-sex relationships.
 

In ranking of the bishop's role and activities, the blessing of same-sex relationships ranked second-to-last. Nearly one-third of the entire sample (31%) disagree or strongly disagree, and one-fifth (20%) are undecided on this issue. Exactly half of the sample (50%) are in agreement. Of the clergy, 61% agree, compared to 49% of the laity. Men (38%) disagree more strongly than women (26%). Younger people are more likely to agree than those over 35. It is important that the next Bishop of New Hampshire continue to ordain and support openly gay and lesbian clergy.

Ordination and support of openly gay and lesbian clergy was the least desired activity of the next Bishop of New Hampshire, with less than half the sample (46%) expressing agreement.  While 54% of the ordained respondents agreed or strongly agreed,  25% expressed some disagreement, with 20% undecided. Of the laity, there was 46% agreement, with a third (34%) either disagreeing or strongly disagreeing.  The largest group to respond "strongly agree" falls into the age category 35 or younger (41%), who make up only 6% of total survey respondents.  (Rank: 14.
