Liturgy Task Force Update
Dear friends,

Please notate our summer meeting schedule in your calendar, as we discussed at our meeting last week. I have not yet had the opportunity to discuss the items below with the bishop, but I will know more of his direction and ideas when we next meet.

Faithfully,
Scott

Agenda for the 28 July 2004 Meeting
(Developed as a result of our previous meeting, particularly the notes below)
1. Planning the Convention Eucharist for Saturday afternoon 30 October: Meeting our goal to present excellent and compelling diocesan liturgies (notes below)

2. Agenda development for 20 August meeting

Notes from the Meeting on Friday 2 July 2004
FIRST: UPDATES
1. Three additions to “specific items to include in our work”: Diocesan Web site section on liturgy and liturgical resources; discussion on the Diocesan Altar Guild; and Scott’s idea for a series book gifts to people in the diocese

2. Book gift idea: Scott recommends Gordon Lathrop’s series Holy Things, Holy People, and Holy Ground as a series of three book gifts to clergy and lay leaders in the diocese. He will discuss this with the bishop and will order copies of these books and have them sent to all members of the Liturgy Task Force for consideration.

3. Cate McMahon likes the idea a monthly column on liturgy in NHEN. Scott will discuss this with the bishop and will plan (tentatively) to write the first one for the September issue.

4. Scott has a meeting with John LeSueur on Monday 12 July to discuss the role of deacons liturgically, a customary for deacons, and training opportunities.

5. Scott has requested a meeting with the liturgical officer of ECUSA – email sent with no reply yet.

6. There is great energy in the task force about attending a gathering in Philadelphia, 11 to 14 November, at which time ECUSA folks will discuss the former “Association of Diocesan Liturgy and Music Commissions” and what kind of national organization(s) might be worthwhile and helpful now that ADLMC no longer exists.

SECOND: THEME OR TITLE FOR THIS WORK
Task force recommendation: “Living Liturgy”
Scott will discuss this with the bishop.

THIRD: HOW TO ORGANIZE THIS WORK
The task force discussed viewing our efforts on liturgy within three major areas as noted below. This would allow us to focus and deal with the matter of prioritization and timeline. For example, we realize that our first priority is a focus on developing an excellent liturgy for Convention Eucharist, and beyond that we can go in many different directions. The task force believes that, under the umbrella of our title “Living Liturgy,” our work would eventually operate within the goal of developing a Liturgical University/Institute, but for now we still need time to get tasks organized so that, if and when we create something, it will have content and not be an abstract entity.

By viewing our work in this manner, the task force believes that the items under “continuing education” will constantly move into the area of new programs, new initiatives, and new categories – all the while we continue to brainstorm new continuing education ideas for the future. This keeps our work dynamic and fluid. In addition, there is energy in the task force to continue our conversation for some time as we work at (a) what we can do right away in a so-called “quiet phase”; (b) how we can “go public” appropriately and in ways that help people to feel included; and (c) prioritizing what needs to be done.
