MEMO/AGENDA to committee: Sent 24 May 2004

Dear friends,

Thanks for your willingness to be part of a committee that, over the next several months, will try to shape how the diocese can best talk about and engage in continuing education on liturgy. Please note our meeting on Friday 11 June, outlined below, and the kinds of discussion items that can inform our conversation then. We will also add additional items for discussion as we move forward, but at least this is a starting point. Please be in touch if you have any questions, and many thanks for your valuable input and efforts.

Meeting
Friday 11 June from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon
Location: Refectory (called “Coit Upper”) conference room, St. Paul’s School
Attached document: Directions to St. Paul’s School and of its campus
Lunch served at 11:30 a.m.

Membership
Bishop Gene Robinson: Grinnh@aol.com
Heath Civetta: phcivetta@comcast.net
Peter Civetta: phcivetta@comcast.net
Scott Erickson: serickson@sps.edu

Ideas and Conversation Points
(NB: Illustrative, not exhaustive, notes from previous conversations, with some additions)
How can we make this a coordinated effort that will build energy and excitement?
Who is our audience?
How do we want our audience to respond?
What message will move the audience toward the desired response?
How can we most effectively deliver that message?
Did it work, and is it or was it effective?

How can we truly make liturgy the “people’s work”?

How might we offer a title or overarching theme for all this?
Liturgy: Sustaining the Community, Welcoming the World
Liturgy: Empowering the Community, etc.
Liturgy as Evangelism: Reaching In, Reaching Out

What specific areas could we consider as we talk about liturgy?
How might we deal with them?
Possibilities for a liturgical university/institute in the diocese (Peter Civetta’s proposal)
The nature of liturgy as evangelism
Training of deacons, LEMs, and lectors
Diocesan-wide liturgies (convention; Holy Week; etc.)
Confirmations
Ordinations
The role of music
Creativity (using Enriching Our Worship; liturgy for same-gender blessings; etc.)
Diocesan Customary (as a guide)
The priest as liturgical leader (body language; presiding; praying; passing the peace; etc.)
Training in local communities (worship committees in congregations; etc.)

What must we keep in mind?
Connections to re-imagining the diocese
Connections to the clergy development program
Connections to the Committee for Liturgy, Music, and the Arts

What kind of timeline might we consider?
Summer: Discussion of the possibilities and the probabilities of our ideas
Summer: Organization of a plan
September: Begin our process; offer book as a conversation-starter
October 2: Example of our program through a program on liturgical space (Weare)
Convention: Liturgy work as part of our diocesan priorities
